MijasTaxi
Mijas Taxi #38 | 13.5 x 14 | Watercolor

Mijas is one of the "pueblos blancos" in the hills on the southern coast of Spain, overlooking the Mediterranean. The village today is a popular tourist destination but its profile from the road leading up probably looks much the same as it did in the last century. Another thing that has endured in Mijas is the Burro Taxi. The sturdy little beasts of burden continue to be reliable transportation up and down the village streets and walkways. They are decorated with colorful trappings woven of brightly colored yarn and have been the subject of many an artist’s painting.

The Rose Wall
The Rose Wall | Watercolor

This wall was between an abandoned field and a dirt lane that followed the Lot river near the perched village of St Cirq Lapopie. I had come down the rutted road separating two fields looking for a place on the river where the village boats would be moored. The wooden punts, made locally and usually moored together, can be a picturesque subject for a painting. This time my search was a bust. As I walked back to the rental car, I passed by this crumbling wall with its trailing roses tenaciously clinging to the rocky side. I missed the boats but the rose wall was a great consolation prize!
